Zhuhai welcomed us with the salt-scented breeze of the South China Sea, a welcome contrast to the landlocked heat of Guangzhou. The minibus rumbled to a stop near the waterfront, where a statue loomed over the bay - a figure of legend gazing out to sea.
It was a strange time, Paul - that weird in-between era after film (with its comforting stash of negatives) but before digital really took off with cloud backups and absurdly high resolutions. Most of my photos were taken on little point-and-shoot cameras with SD cards, so a few inevitably vanished over the years. I’m grateful for the ones that remain, though. That said, there’ll come a point in the blog where I’ll have to start reusing some - I only have a handful from the college and the neighbourhood! 😄
Back them up then back them up again!!! Last year my external hard drive collapsed, and with it, so many, so many photos. Luckily I had the important ones in other places, but still - I was upset for months about losing my so many photos. Back yours up, again!!
escaping from the business of Guangzhou is essential if you want to maintain your sanity when you live there. Zhuhai is a welcome respite - not as chaotic as Shenzhen; but a city, like you said, content with itself.
China is such a fascinating country! I love reading your heartfelt stories and feeling where the two cultures touch.
Thank you!
Wonderful that you still have some pictures from that time. Good memories. 🙏

Grateful for what we have… I do wish my younger self had thought more about posterity.
